In dit werk worden de begrafenisgewoontes van de Luba in het noorden van Katanga van enkele decennia geleden vergeleken met de hedendaagse begrafenissen in Lubumbashi. Doorheen de hoofdstukken wordt duidelijk waar er continuïteit is en waar zich breuklijnen vertonen tussen de landelijke gewoontes van weleer en de wijzen van de stad in het hedendaagse Katanga. Via de evolutie van de begrafenispraktijken en de organisatie van de rouw, wordt de sociale, generationele, familiale en religieuze dynamiek in de verf gezet. De stadsbegrafenissen van vandaag lijken minder doordrenkt van het universum van de bloedverwantschap, zelfs al spelen die vandaag nog altijd een fundamentele rol, en religieuze groeperingen gaan zich steeds meer bezighouden met de sociale aspecten rond de dood. Het boek biedt de lezer een genuanceerd beeld van de nieuwe hedendaagse manieren waarop er in Congo met de dood wordt omgegaan, en werpt aan de hand van begrafenissen een originele blik op sociale verandering.

This work compares the funeral practices by the North Katanga Luba a couple of decades ago with the contemporary funerals of Lumbumbashi. The continuity and the breaks between the rural doings of the past and the urban procedures of contemporary Katanga become apparent throughout the chapters. The evolution of funeral practices and the organisation of mourning underline the social, generational, religious and family dynamics. The urban funerals of today seem less imbued with the universe of kinship, albeit they still play a fundamental role, while groups of religious affiliations are increasingly playing a part in the social management of death. The book offers the reader a subtle view on the contemporary reconfigurations of Congo's dealing with death, and an original perspective on social change through funerals.
