This course is designed to provide students with a foundation of knowledge in African Art and the people who produce, use, sell, buy and exhibit such works. Emphasis will also be placed on approaches to study of non-western art, the identification of works, styles, and the broad context in which each piece was conceived and executed- hence , its purpose and function  within the society.

In particular, the class will be exposed to a great variety of art forms including sculpture, textiles, metalwork, beadwork and ephemeral arts.

Students who successfully  complete this course will be able to demonstrate an understanding of African Art and culture by identifying ethnic groups, functions and styles of art among the major groups identified. Furthermore, students will also be able to give thoughtful critique to the production, use, exchange and exhibition of such visual culture.
