Following the death of their grandfather who died in a landslide that engulfed his hut, Jairo and Marina decide to take a trip back into their past to try to recover their family land. Jairo, a roving photographer and Marina, who has lost her memory and is mute, are cousins...

After the death of their grandfather (EDGARDO ROMÁN) in a mudslide, Jairo (JULIÁN ROMÁN), an itinerant photographer, and Marina (PAOLA BALDIÓN), his young amnesic and mute cousin, decide to go back and try to recover the land from which she was displaced years ago. They travel from Bogotá to the Caribbean coast in an old beat-up Renault 4. During the trip the story of her traumatic past starts to unfold. Upon reaching their hometown, paramilitary soldiers kidnap them. While attempting to flee, Jairo is wounded. Marina goes to the ruins of her family home where she remembers the killing of her family. She goes back with the deed of their land, to Jairo whose life is fading fast. She takes him to the sea to die.

PORTRAITS IN A SEA OF LIES is a portrait of Colombia, a country that has suffered a civil war during the last 60 years. Several hundred thousand people have been killed and more than 4 million have been displaced. Nevertheless, Colombians see themselves as the happiest people in the world.

Carlos Gaviria directed the film from an original screenplay he wrote. Erwin Goggel was the Producer. He has a long list of credits, including the highly acclaimed Colombian film LA VENDEDORA DE ROSAS (The Rose Seller), which was in the Official Competition in Cannes in 1998.
PORTRAITS IN A SEA OF LIES was filmed in super 16mm., color, on location in Colombia.
