Presentation of the Spanish Film Library (Filmoteca Española)

Filmoteca Española is a body responsible for the preservation of the Spanish film heritage. It is a Deputy Director-General of the Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts. Its mission is to recover, investigate and conserve film heritage and promote its knowledge. The functions of the Spanish Film Library are defined in Royal Decree 7/1997 of 10 January.

The collection of film collections is the core of Filmoteca Española and its raison d'être. The International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), of which Filmoteca Española has been a member since 1956, gives these institutions the status of historical archives. Its peculiarity is that it is, at the same time, a living archive, which is responsible for collecting and preserving the film documents that are currently being produced, to ensure their conservation and to facilitate their dissemination for both research and dissemination purposes. It also investigates, recovers and restores Spain's film heritage.

The Spanish Film Library processes and analyzes the film collections and complements them with other documents -books, magazines, posters, photographs, press-books, etc- that constitute its library and graphic archive. In addition, it has an important collection of sound records, as well as an interesting series of objects related to the history of cinema and the pre-cine: cameras, magic lanterns, zootropes, daguerreotypes, ferrotypes, Chinese shadows, projectors, laboratory equipment and other devices that extend in time from the seventeenth century to the present day.

Presentación de la Filmoteca Española

Filmoteca Española es un organismo encargado de la preservación del patrimonio cinematográfico español. Es una Subdirección General del Instituto de la Cinematografía y de las Artes Audiovisuales. Tiene como misión recuperar, investigar y conservar el patrimonio cinematográfico y promover su conocimiento. Las funciones de Filmoteca Española están definidas en el Real Decreto 7/1997, de 10 de enero.

La colección de fondos fílmicos constituye el núcleo de Filmoteca Española y su razón de ser. La Federación Internacional de Archivos Fílmicos (FIAF), de la que Filmoteca Española forma parte desde 1956, otorga a estas instituciones el carácter de archivos históricos. Su peculiaridad estriba en que se trata, al mismo tiempo, de un archivo vivo, que se ocupa de recoger y preservar los documentos cinematográficos que se están produciendo actualmente, de garantizar su conservación y de facilitar su difusión con fines tanto de investigación como divulgativos. También investiga, recupera y restaura el patrimonio cinematográfico español.

La Filmoteca Española procesa y analiza los fondos fílmicos y los complementa con otros documentos -libros, revistas, carteles, fotografías, press-books, etcétera- que constituyen su biblioteca y archivo gráfico. Además, cuenta con una importante colección de registros sonoros, así como una interesante serie de objetos relacionados con la historia del cine y el pre-cine: cámaras, linternas mágicas, zootropos, daguerrotipos, ferrotipos, sombras chinescas, proyectores, material de laboratorio y otros aparatos que se extienden en el tiempo desde el siglo XVII hasta nuestros días.
